The truth about trend colors…

Hello. This is Tsukamoto, the designer.

Design trends, whether in clothing or anything else, come around again and again, don't they?

In fashion, the trend colors change every year.

Many people probably think that trend colors are called that because they're popular.

Trends on platforms like Twitter are determined by the number of tweets—in other words, by how much interest there is—but with fashion it's different.

In fashion, trend colors are decided two years in advance.

That's because the fashion industry starts with proposals for the colors that will be in vogue.

Divided into spring, summer, and autumn/winter, trend colors are announced to the world by an organization called Intercolor, and six months ahead of the season, fashion shows are held. These are the four major collections in London, Paris, Milan, and New York.

Then they're featured in magazines and the information becomes widely known.

So this year's trend colors were actually prepared two years ago…

In this way, fashion is linked from the global information level through planning, production, and retail, ultimately becoming the products we buy. There are various offshoots, but this is how the overall fashion season unfolds.

However, these days, with the diversification of lifestyles, major trend phenomena are apparently becoming less likely to occur.

That was a little trivia about trend colors…!
