When we handle production, we back up the entire site, so we can cope to a certain extent, but if the site was built with a CMS, restoring it can be difficult.

There may be all sorts of reasons, but when you want to play back an old site, there is a handy tool.
That is the free tool we're introducing this time: the "Internet Archive Wayback Machine."

The "Wayback Machine" uses its own crawler to visit and save entire website pages.
Crawled pages are stored in chronological order, so you can call up the page as it was at any given time.

So what does it actually look like? Let's walk through it along with the screens.
This time we'll use Merci's website as an example.

Let's go straight to the Wayback Machine

First, go to the Wayback Machine website (https://web.archive.org/).

Once the page appears, enter the URL of the website you want to play back into the search box.
You'll then see the archive status of pages saved going back in time.
This website was launched in 2008, and you can check the indexing status from its launch right up to today.
The black vertical bars show how often the site was indexed; the more frequent the indexing, the taller the bar.
This time, let's play back to February 23, 2009.

Click 2009 and the calendar below switches to 2009.
The circled dates on the calendar are the days that were indexed. This time, click February 23, 2009 to select it.

The website as it was on February 23, 2009 is now displayed!
