In this blog post, I'd like to introduce a way to fill in the missing areas of a photo in an instant.

There are plenty of occasions when you need to fill in extra area.
For example, the four corners that end up empty when you rotate a photo, or when you want more margin.
But painting it in yourself is quite a chore.
So I'd like to introduce a handy Photoshop feature.

To make it easy to see, I've prepared an image with a missing area on the left side.

Let's fill this in.

First, use the Magic Wand to select the area you want to fill in.

Next, choose "Edit" > "Fill."

Next, choose how to fill it. Under "Contents," select "Content-Aware," set the blending mode to "Normal" and opacity to "100%," then click OK.

Photoshop will then automatically fill in the area to match the photo.

It looks almost completely natural.

Depending on the image, you may need to make manual adjustments from here with tools like the Clone Stamp, but compared with doing the whole thing by hand from the start, it's a very easy way to fill in the missing areas.

In my case, I often use it together with the "Ruler" tool I introduced in my previous blog post.
